Vaping In Germany in 2024: Everything You Need To Know

Italy is full of beautiful scenic sights, historical buildings and good food and it's become one of the UK's most favoured spots for a weekend break away. But what are the rules for vaping in Italy? Read our blog to get a full understanding of everything you need to know before you jet off to Italy!

Is It Legal To Vape In Germany?

Vaping is legal in Germany, with the same restrictions for where you can vape and what you can buy as here in the UK.

Yes, it is legal to vape in Germany and the use of e-cigarettes amongst adults in Germany has seen a steady rise year on year. There is a total of 1.5 million adult vapers in Germany, giving a total prevelance to 2.1% of the total adult population.

Vaping is fairly advocated in Germany with the annual Hall of Vape convention being held in Germany every year.

Germany have similar legalities surrounding where you can vape much like other countries in the EU as well as the UK. However, much like Italy, Germany have adopted and introduced a levy tax on bottles of e-liquid which we will explain further on in this blog.

The legal age to use and purchase e-cigarettes and e-liquids is 18 years or older.

Can I Bring Disposable Vapes To Germany?

Yes, there are currently no regulations or restrictions on disposable vapes in Germany.

You're able to take Disposable vapes with you on holiday to Germany, and you'll also be able to buy replacement disposable vape devices from specialist vape shops as well as tobacconists and convenience stores in Germany. The availability of all vaping related products does seem to span country wide.

Can You Vape At German Airports?

You cannot vape within the Terminal buildings in German Airports, however some of the key airports in Germany have installed enclosed smoking area/vaping areas within the  Terminal as well as outdoor vaping areas too.

Germany do not permit vaping inside any enclosed public building, and airports is one of these on the list. But that doesn't mean that the airports are totally off limits for being able to vape in.

Frankfurt Airport has what looks like some of the nicest in Europe indoor and enclosed smoking and vaping areas situated within the airport. There's at least half a dozen situated within the terminals, as well as an open air smoking/vaping area on the roof deck where you don't have to be enclosed in with smokers.

And both Berlin airports have indoor lounges where you can vape but the only downside is these are shared with smokers which may not be ideal if you're not wanting to be surrounded by the tempting smells of cigarette smoke, especially if you have recently quit smoking!

Vape Regulations in Germany

Germany follows the TPD regulations, but they also have imposed a tax on their 10ml bottles too.

Germany are part of the European Union, so the regulations set out by the Tobacco Products Directive apply to them the same as it does in all other member countries:

  • E-Liquids cannot excdeed 20mg nicotine strength
  • E-Liquids that contain nicotine must not be sold in bottles larger than 10ml
  • Refillable Vape Tanks/Disposable Vapes must not exceed 2ml total vape juice capacity
  • Product packaging must contain a clear warning that the product may contain nicotine

In 2022, Germany imposed a taxation on bottle of nicotine containing vape liquids as well as nicotine shots as well and it's a fairly harsh one at that. In 2022, 0.16 cents per ml was added, which increased to 0.20 cents in 2024 before settling at 0.30 cents in 2026. That's per ml as well, so currently a 10ml bottle of e-liquid is costing upwards of 10 Euro in Germany.

Make sure you stock up on E-Liquid before you go, as a bottle of Edge Core is a fraction of the cost of a bottle of e-liquid in Germany!

Where Can You Buy Vapes In Germany?

As mentioned, Germany is big on vaping (despite the taxation) and there appears to be a vast number of specialist vape shops spread around the country!

VapStore appears to be one of the biggest vape shops in Germany, with shops dotted around Germany as well as having a good online presence as well, and good reviews on Trip Advisor! Other big name stores include VaporFreak and Dash Vapes.

You can also buy your vape products from tobacconists, as well as supermarkets, and conveience stores as well.

But remember that bottles of e-liquid aren't going to be as cheap as they are here in the UK due to the tax per ml, and
we would always recommend to take enough supplies with you for the duration of your trip, but it's also good to know that you can still get your essentials if you find yourself running low!

Where Can You Vape in Germany?

Germany have similar restrictions on where you can vape to what we have here in the UK.

Germany have a standardised set of regulations for where you can and cannot vape. These should be clearly sign posted so make sure you check your surroundings, or if in doubt, ask a local or member of staff if you're in a public building.

  • Vaping is not permitted in resteraunts but some will allow it in outdoor seating areas. Check for signage or ask staff for clarification.
  • Vaping is mostly prohibited in enclosed public spaces such as resteraunts, bars and clubs. It's also not permitted in or near outdoor children's play areas like parks.
  • Vaping is not allowed on any form of public transport such as buses, trams or trains.
