Can Vaping Help You Quit Smoking?

It certainly can, and is proving to be one of the most effective methods of smoking cessation.

When quitting smoking, it's recommend that a form of nicotine replacement therapy is used to help make the process of quitting easier and to ensure that nicotine withdrawals do not begin setting in. 

The more conventional forms of NRT that are used often are things like Nicotine Patches, Nicotine Gum, Sprays or Lozenges. These products all have low doses of nicotine in and can be used to replace the nicotine you'd previously got from smoking tobacco products. 

However, recent studies have shown that there is a different method for nicotine which is not officially classed or recognised as a form of NRT but it is proving to be the more successful method, and that is using an e-cigarette with nicotine containing vape liquids.  

All conventional forms of NRT we mentioned above are available to be prescribed by GPs to help people quit, whereas e-cigarettes are not currently available on prescription, but GPs and Stop Smoking services both recommend people try vaping as a way to help them quit smoking.

Vaping can mimic the effects of smoking which is what some people may crave or miss if they were to give up smoking. The hand to mouth effect, inhaling and exhaling, and the nicotine absorbing into the system and this is why vaping can help you quit smoking in an effective way.

It's estimated that over 5000 chemicals are produced and harboured in cigarette smoke, with at least over 50 of them being toxic carcinogens. These are not present in the vapour produced by an e-cigarette so vaping offers a safer option for nicotine compared to smoking. 

Public Health England declared in 2016, and then reaffirmed their stance in 2022, that vaping is 95% safer than smoking. And contrary to popular belief, nicotine is not one of the harmful chemicals associated with tobacco products. Cancer Research UK says on their website;

If using a pen vape with a coil of the above resistance, the wattage output will likely be around 10-12w, which is the perfect wattage range for MTL vaping and will give a punchy, but smooth throat hit, and only a subtle amount of vapour which would be replicant of the smoke produced from a cigarette.
