Preparing To Quit And Setting Your Goals
You may have set quitting smoking as your top new years resolution for 2025 and preparing yourself for the journey ahead.
We've created this blog to help you prepare to quit as well as offering some guidance and advice on quitting and how to set yourself some goals to try and achieve on your quitting journey.
List Your Reasons Why You're Quitting Smoking
People will want to quit smoking for various different reasons, and the reasons why you're quitting will likely differ to the next person who are wanting to quit. One of the best things to do while you're in the preperation phase of quitting smoking is to list your reasons why you're wanting to quit smoking.
This list will be your personal reference and relatable to you and what you want to achieve. And it's also good to keep a list as a reference point that you can keep going back to whilst on your quitting journey, especially if you're struggling to quit as this could help provide some much needed motivation of reminding yourself of the reasons why you're giving up smoking.
Quitting smoking is one of the hardest things a person can do in their life, and it's certainly no easy task. A lot of people don't succeed on their first attempt of quitting, and it may take a few good go's before they're successfully in totally quitting, and this may also apply to you.
Your list will be self created of your own reasons but an example of some of the top reasons why people want to quit smoking is:
- To improve your health
- To save money by not having to buy tobacco products
- Health related reasons
- Reduce the risk of smoking related illnesses
- Improve your oral hygiene
- To stop exposing others around you to passive smoking
There are 100's of different reasons why people will want to quit smoking, so give it a good think and make a list of your reasons why you want to quit smoking for the new year ahead.
Set Realistic & Achieveable Goals
As recommended in the title of this blog, you should set yourself some goals to achieve on your quitting journey. And the pivotal thing you must do here is to make them realistic and achieveable!
By this, we mean to be kind to yourself and give yourself enough time to reach these goals. For example, setting yourself the goal of fully quitting smoking within 1 week of the new year is quite a stretch and maybe a little unrealistic. Quitting smoking is a big thing to do, especially if you've been smoking for a while, it's a sudden change in your normal routine and to adapt to it that quickly is some feat, but that's not to say there aren't people out there who have achieved this and we tip our metaphorical hats to those that have!
By making your goals realistic, chances are you're going to hit them and the enormous sense of wellbeing and accomplishment that you'll feel when you do hit your goals will be incredible and make you want to continue pushing on in your quitting journey to a smoke free future!
Examples Of Goals To Set Yourself When Quitting
Much like the list of reasons why you're quitting smoking, the list of goals you want to set yourself to hit will be unique to you and may differ from the next person who are on their own quitting journey. We'll list some examples below of goals which you can set yourself and how to go about achieving them.
Set An End Date To Become Completely Smoke Free - Having an end date to work towards is a goal we would highly recommend to anyone quitting smoking, as this acts as a focus point for you and something to work towards.
When quitting, you may find that you "dual use" which is vaping as well as still smoking, but smoking in moderation and less than you normally would as you'd be getting sufficent nicotine from your e-cigarette and vape juice containing nicotine.
One of your goals could be to set the date to become totally smoke free, and only using your vape for your nicotine needs. This could be one month, 6 months, or however many months you think it'll take, the choice is completely yours but remember to make it realistic as we've mentioned above!
Set Up A Savings Tracker - The cost of smoking is far from cheap, with prices of combustible tobacco products continuously rising year on year. So one goal you could set yourself would be how much money you'd want to save by a specific time by quitting smoking.
By quitting smoking, you wouldn't need to be spending out on tobacco products, so you could always save that money and put it aside for a rainy day! This also ties in with one of the reasons why people want to quit smoking.
Plan Some Rewards To Keep Motivated - You could set yourself some rewards for when you hit specific milestones on your quitting journey, or when you hit one of the goals you've set yourself like being smoke free for one month etc. Having a reward to work towards definitely would provide some motivation to continue on your journey and help you achieve your goals!
Tips To Help You Be Successful In Quitting Smoking
We'll round this blog off with some top tips which may help you succeed in quitting smoking.
Don't Get Disheartened If You Don't Succeed First Try - As we mentioned above, quitting smoking isn't an easy task and it's something you might not succeed with on your first try. If this is the case, don't get disheartened by it as you're not the first person and certainly won't be the last person that didn't quite get it right the first attempt.
Use this as motivation towards your next attempt, believe you can do it and you want to do it, and you'll succeed!
Avoid Trigger Situations - Trigger situations relate to situations what could potentially trigger you to want to smoke and it's best to try and avoid these where possible, but some are easier said than done!
The key ones to try and avoid are not surrounding yourself with smokers, like when you're out with friends or at work, if they're smoking around you, this may be tempting to want to smoke so it's best to try and distance yourself from that tempting smell of cigarette smoke!
Other situations are when you'd previously normally reached for your cigarettes or tobacco like after a meal or first thing in the morning. The easiest solution for this would be replacing it with a few puffs on your vape for example.
Remove Smoking Related Items From Your View - This one is crucial for keeping your urges to smoke at bay and that is removing all smoking related things from your view. Things like your tobacco/cigarettes and even lighters are best to be disposed of or kept out of sight. This way you won't be tempted to reach for them if they're within touching distance.
Build A Support Network - Having the support of your family and friends during your quitting attempts can be absolutely pivotal in helping you be successful. Let them know you've quit, and ask for their support as and when you need it.
Or even find a friend who is also wanting to quit and buddy up to simultaneously quit together and you can share your experiences, barriers and support one another on your individual journeys!
